Berryville Farm, LLC was started in 2009 by Norm Mattson. After spending nearly 34 years as a successful engineering manager for a local company, Norm decided it was time for a career change and time to start pursuing his “retirement” job. Having an interest in horticulture and readily available land, a detailed investigation led him to strawberries. Because after all, who doesn’t like fresh strawberries!
In the spring of 2009, after planting 15,000 strawberry plants of different varieties, Berryville Farm, LLC was born.
The farm’s name has its origin in the historic Berryville Neighborhood in the Town of Somers, Kenosha County. In the early half of the 1900’s the surrounding area was a hub of berry farms, producing berries for the Chicago market. Each week during the season, local farmers would load their freshly picked berries at a local train stop and transport them to their big city customers.
Over the years, the farms slowly disappeared as did the neighborhood’s identity. What remains is the excellent soil and a micro climate along Lake Michigan which helps to produce our delicious fresh strawberries and other produce.
